Dead of July – A German Ghost Story

My book ‘Dead of July’ took me a little over a year to write. I was extremely proud of myself when I finished it in April of last year. I found an editor who took my money and promised, that it would be ready to publish in October. The promise was not kept, so I rescheduled for March. You guessed, the promise was not kept. “Okay” I said “Lets get it ready for July, after all it’s called ‘Dead of July'” You guessed, the promise was not kept.

What was supposed to be one of the happiest times in my life was spoiled by someone who was paid to edit a book, but decided, after she took my money, that she couldn’t produce the goods. Someone I trusted, and paid, let me down.

My book will still be published, and it will be a great book to read, but I have learned a valuable lesson about editing. An editor should be able to produce the goods in around three or possibly four months. Not give excuse after excuse as to why it’s not published for a year. Hopefully ‘Dead of July’ will be published by September after being edited by someone who keeps their promises and cares about their reputation.

Keep following and learn from my mistakes. I haven’t given up on my book, but I have given up on the editor who promised me the world, but never gave me one finished chapter.

Ghosts – Indie Writers and Editing!

I am an oddball. Eccentric, crazy, no one ever knows just what I am going to say next, but they don’t mind. I am who I am. I won’t offend with my comments, but I do say what I think. Been that way all my life.

I have seen ghosts and had premonitions all my life too, which is why I started to write about them. The introduction of E-books made this much easier for me, and I published two short stories on Amazon in 2010. I also used ‘Create Space’ to publish in print. I was extremely proud of myself.

My dear friend Roberta held a book launch party for me, and I talked about writing and autographed copies of my books. It felt great.

On Amazon, I got some fabulous reviews for these books, and a couple that weren’t so good, but I was happy.

No one ever commented on my editing (copy or content), but when I went back and re-read these books, I cringed.

I did work with an editor,  and she tried to guide me and give me advice, but I was impatient and rushed these books out. I think in the end she threw her hands in the air and gave up.

Don’t get me wrong the editing isn’t awful, but if I ever re-publish them, I will make changes.

For the last eighteen months I have been writing a story called ‘Dead of July’.

I did not rush this book to my editor when I finished it. Instead I re-read it, and in some chapters, re-wrote it. When I was as satisfied as I coud be with the end result I sent it to Amy, who is my new editor, and working hard to guide me through the process. www.theeyesforediting.com

On Monday she returned Chapter One with her edits. My first instinct was to rush through and make changes as  quickly as I could and get it back to her, but I didn’t. Instead I took my time. I read and digested her advice and comments and then acted on them. It may take another two or three edits on this chapter alone before I am satisfied with it, but that’s OK. To keep my readers happy, I have to be satisfied with the book I want them to buy.

‘Dead of July’, is my first full length novel and will be released in late summer.

Guess what I have!!!!!

74 paper pages!

After a long day at work, I came home and checked the mail, and look what I found!

I have a book in print! I feel so important, a paperback with my name on the front.

Of course this is just my copy to proof read, so it will be a couple of weeks before it is available for sale on Amazon and Smashwords.

It is so very exciting though!

A book I can sign and put a special message inside to give as a gift to someone.

I love it!

The last eighteen months, whilst I have been writing and learning how to get published, have been extremely exciting for me. This book may never be a best seller, but its mine!

Buy it, I think you might enjoy it.

Already available as an e-book from Amazon and Smashwords.
